Dino Den


Exhibition Description

Dino Den invites your visitors to uncover the fascinating prehistoric world of dinosaurs. The feature of the exhibition is a popular excavation site with fossils buried in large bricks of plaster. Under the supervision of a staff person, guests chip away millions of years of history. Junior paleontologists can also put together and take apart dinosaur puzzles of Triceratops, Apatosaurus, Parasauralophus and Dimetrodon, examine large dinosaur fossils in cases, compare their height to that of a 43 feet long, 12.5 feet high Giganotosaurus and a 28 feet long, 12.5 feet high Triceratops, and crawl inside an oversized dinosaur egg.

Exhibit Components

Dino Dig

Visitors become paleontologists in the field as they dig for fossil remains from various organisms. The only things missing are the hot sun and the rattlesnakes. Dino Dig includes four 4 feet x 4 feet fossil beds, flooring, 3-D backdrop and all the tools needed to remove the fossils. Embedded fossils include both real and cast fossils.

Display Cases

These cases contain casts and real fossils from various dinosaurs, including Hadrosaurus and Albertosaurus. The cases resemble old wooden packing case and have a see-through Lexan top.

3-D Dino Puzzles

These large and colourful interlocking 3-D puzzles are made from tough 1/2 -inch polyethylene. Visitors can assemble dinosaurs such as Triceratops, Apatosaurus, Parasaurolophus and the ancient reptile Dimetrodon.

Crawl-in-Egg

Young visitors crawl inside a model of a dinosaur egg (eight times bigger than life size) and imagine that they are a baby dinosaur.

Wall Murals

These two life-size murals show the skeletons of the meat-eater, Giganotosaurus and plant-eater, Triceratops. These murals are big and require a large wall space. (Not available at this time).

SPORT II


Exhibit Description

Sport II invites your visitors to actively learn about various aspects of sport.
The features of sport offer a wide variety of challenges, that will test both your physical and mental capacity.

Minimum length of space 85ft with 14 foot ceilings.
$36,000 US four week rental.

BALANCE BEAM

Basic Information

Take a walk on a 10 cm-wide competition balance beam and try the sport now practiced primarily by young women but which originated as a military exercise.

See why some gymnasts say "it is all in the nose" as you watch your own in the mirror at the end of the beam.

Learn how your ears and stomach get involved in the balancing act.


Technical Description

Components: Seven ft. balance beam with padded enclosure and end wall, including 5 slanted cabinets, Cabinet island with stork timer, ear canal models, marbles, English/French graphic panels, one custom 14 foot (two 7 ft. segments) electrical tower with banners.

BASEBALL PITCH

Basic Information

Join the major leagues - try your hand at pitching a baseball the regulation distance of 18 meters (60 feet, 6 inches) from pitcher's mound to home plate. The speed and accuracy of your pitch will be registered, and if you manage to hit the strike zone, the thump of the ball hitting the right spot will bring a cheer to your ears. Check out the science of throwing a curve and study life casts of pitchers' hands taken as they wind up for the pitch

Components: Pitching mound, metal structure covered with netting (65 ft. x 11 ft. x 11 ft.), strike zone target pad, electronic timing device and display, artifacts and English/French graphics.

BASKETBALL CHALLENGE

 Basic Information

Challenge yourself or a friend to a short basketball competition. See how many baskets you can shoot in 1, 2, or 3 minutes (the number of successful shots is displayed on a LED panels). Learn about the exciting sport of wheelchair basketball.

Technical Notes

Components: Woodfloor 12' deep by 18' wide, two regulation size adjustable baskets, 1, 2 or 3 minutes timer, two LED display counters, text graphic panels. The mini court is surrounded on 2 sides by a net 14' high.

CLIMBING WALL

Basic Information

Experience the thrills and chills of rock climbing - at a safe 50 cm of the ground. Get a grip on a simulated rock face and explore climbing techniques ranging from the "pinch grip" to the "opposition hold". If you're really good, you may even find the "micro holds"!

Technical Description

Components: The climbing wall has 12 panels (4 ft x 8 ft ) arranged into rectangular shape (8 ft x 12 ft ) with 14.5 m (48 ft ) of linear length. It is surrounded by gym floor mats ( 6 ft around the wall).

Area (with mats): 45 sq. m (480 sq. ft).


LAND LIKE A CAT

Basic Information

For parachuters, gymnasts and high jumpers, the landing is as important as the take-off. Spreading the force of impact can save athletes from serious injury. Take a low jump and measure the force of your landing.

If you do well, you'll receive wild applause. 

If you do not ... well, you can always slink back like a cat and try again later.

Components: Jumping platform and stairs, landing pad scale and electronic processor, cabinet with video laser disk system and monitor, cabinet with Bone stress exhibit, cabinet with karate chop exhibit, English/French graphic panels, one custom 14 foot (two 7 ft. segments) electrical tower with banners.

MANDALA®

Basic Information

The Mandala® System is camera-based virtual reality system that allows participants to view themselves on a TV screen and interact with the animations that surround their live on-screen video image. To mix participant's image and the computer generated background the system utilizes "blue screen" technology (same technology is used sometimes on TV or in the movies). The blue backdrop allows the computer to isolate participant's image and superimpose it with computer generated, animated background. The Mandala's original tracking system reads the player's movements and allows for full body interaction with the animation without the player having to wear, touch or hold anything.

Turbo Kourier.
In this game the player is a courier, zooming across a futuristic city skyscape on a turbo-propelled skyboard. The player navigates through the world by leaning in the direction he/she wants to go, picking up packages and points, and avoiding perils.

"RUNNING" - COMPUTER STATION

Basic Information

Check you running knowledge for young and old alike. Here is your chance to learn about stretching techniques,running styles, records and much more about the physics of running. The video material for this exhibit was prepared and programmed by the Faculty of Physical Education at the University of Calgary.

Components: One computer station with laser disc player and touch screen monitor.

SEE YOURSELF WALK

Basic Information

Find out why walking involves a lot of fancy footwork - and how crawling as a baby helps you walk today. Step onto a treadmill, turn to a TV monitor and watch how you look from behind as you walk, You will gain new perspective on this unique and complex human motion.

Components: Treadmill with 2 video cameras and monitor, 3 slanted cabinets forming padded enclosure, cabinet with foot models and thermally sensitive foot pads, video cabinet with laser disk system and monitor, English/French graphic panels, one custom 14 foot (two 7 ft. segments) electrical tower with banners.

SPIN PLATFORM

Basic Information

Why do figure skaters spin faster when they pull in their arms - and how do they keep from feeling dizzy? Experience the effects of angular momentum without ever strapping on skates. Explore the physics of twirling toys and create your own art employing these principles of rotation.

SPORT INJURIES - SAVING KNEES AND NECKS

Basic Information

Discover the dangers of turf toe, rotator cuff, cauliflower ear, cyclist's bottom and more. Peer through an arthroscope and see how knee surgery is performed. Learn how sports injuries happen - and how to avoid them.


Technical Description

Components: Lightbox display highlighting common sports injuries, Knee joints with arthroscopic eyepieces, medical artifacts, video cabinet, monitor, laser disk player, audio hand-sets, panel backdrop, English/French graphic panels.

SPRINT TRACK

Basic Information

Check you running skill for young and old alike. Here is your chance to see how fast you really are. Wait for the start signal and race an Olympic Champion, or another challenger. Record your running time over the 40 feet, and you can run again and best your last run.
Use our interactive touch screen video station to learn about physics of running. The video material for this exhibit was prepared and programmed by the Faculty of Physical Education at the University of Calgary.

Technical Description

Components: 64 feet of indoor running track, made up of eight 8 foot sections. A9 foot high starting gate that includes selection buttons so you can choose a challenger. A timing clock for checking your time, and one hundred and twenty feet of maple side rails with chase lights. One 9 foot high gate at the finish line that includes a flashing sign to show who won the race.

WHEELCHAIR MARATHON - DISABLED ATHLETES

Basic Information

Sprint 50 meters in a specialized sport wheelchair set on rollers. Race a friend and compare your time to that of an elite wheelchair athlete. You will discover that when it comes to wheelchair racing, a little push on the inner rim goes a long way. You can also examine a new design for a prosthetic running leg and play with a ball used in a game for the blind.

Components: Two wheelchairs, roller/bearing assemblies, platform and railing, six backdrop panels, LED timing display cabinet with electronics, video cabinet with laser disk system and monitor, English/French graphic panels, one custom 14 foot (two 7 ft. segments) electrical tower with banners, two racing wheelchairs mounted on the back wall (loan from the Alberta Wheelchair Association).

YOU BE THE JUDGE

Basic Information

A must for armchair experts! Join five other visitors to score an athletic performance. Discover how difficult it can be to judge figure skating, synchronized swimming, gymnastics and more. A freeze frame replay will show you what expert judges look for.

Technical Description

Components: Video housing, platform, railing and 6 stools, laser disk player system with large monitor, 6 electronic scoring stations, two Macintosh computers with You Be The Judge software, 2 side cabinets, 2 stools, English/French panels.
