Rare Total Lunar Eclipse
October 27, 2004
On Wednesday, October 27, Albertans will really be seeing a red Moon rising,
just in time for Halloween. No it's not an illusion or even an atmospheric
effect but a rare total lunar eclipse, the second to be seen in Alberta this
year. For Albertans, the lunar eclipse will be starting as the Moon rises. The
following are times for the event for three locations in Alberta including the
altitude of the Moon in degrees and the direction to look:
Edmonton Calgary Grande Prairie Moonrise: 6:01 p.m. MDT 6:10 p.m. MDT 6:18 p.m. MDT Penumbral eclipse begins: 6:05 p.m. MDT Moon rising in east (not visible) (not visible) Partial (umbral) eclipse begins:7:14 p.m. MDT visible (Alt. 9.7°, E) visible (Alt. 9°, E) visible (6.9°, E) Total eclipse begins: 8:23 p.m. MDT visible (Alt. 20°, ESE) visible (Alt. 20°, ESE) visible (Alt. 17°, ESE) Mid-eclipse 9:04 p.m. MDT visible (Alt. 26°, ESE) visible (Alt. 26°, ESE) visible (Alt. 22°, ESE) Total eclipse ends: 9:44 p.m. MDT visible (Alt. 32°, ESE) visible (Alt. 32°, ESE) visible (Alt. 28°, ESE) Partial (umbral) eclipse ends: 10:53 p.m. MDT visible (Alt. 40°, ESE) visible (Alt. 41°, ESE) visible (Alt. 37°, ESE) Penumbral eclipse ends: 12:02 a.m. MDT visible (Alt.47°, SE) visible (Alt. 49°, SE) visible (Alt. 44°, SE)
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon travels through the Earth's shadow in space and occurs only when we have the right alignment between the Sun, Earth and the Moon. During the total eclipse portion the Moon will have completely entered the Earth's dark (umbral) shadow making the Moon take on a dark red or rusty appearance. Although no direct sunlight is reaching the Moon during the umbral eclipse, the Moon does become illuminated by a small amount of long wavelength (red) sunlight refracting through the Earth's atmosphere. After the total lunar eclipse ends at 9:44 p.m. MDT we will begin to see the Moon slowly unveil itself out of the Earth's umbral shadow. At 10:53 p.m. MDT, the partial umbral eclipse of the Moon will end and we will again see our Full Moon of October known as the Hunter's Moon. The next total lunar eclipse visible from Alberta after this one will take place in the early morning hours on August 28, 2007. So we will have to wait three years to see the next one!
Viewing a lunar eclipse will require no special filters or optical instruments. It is entirely safe to watch, unlike a solar eclipse. Telescopes and binoculars will give you a better view by showing greater detail on the Moon but are not necessary to view a lunar eclipse. Since the Moon will be rising when the eclipse stages begin, eclipse viewers may wish to find a location that provides an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon. Individuals in apartments with a clear view to the east will definitely have an advantage.
For individuals wishing to watch the lunar eclipse through telescopes, the Odyssium and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (Edmonton Centre) will have telescopes set up around the Odyssium's Observatory in Coronation Park from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The event is free of charge and we invite everyone interested out for it! Remember, the event is weather dependant and consequently the eclipse may not be visible if we have overcast skies. So dress warmly for the event and let's hope for clear skies!

Rare Planetary Alignment,
International Space Station Visible In our Early Evening Sky
From March 22 until April 10, look up in our night sky and you will see a rare planetary alignment that will not take place again in our evening sky until the year 2036. All five of the naked-eye planets - Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn will be visible in our early evening sky stretching from the west to the east. Mercury is located just above the western horizon at sunset, Venus is the brightest object in our night sky seen high in the west at sunset, Mars is currently located above Venus and appears as a reddish colored "star", the ringed planet Saturn is found high in the south and Jupiter shines brilliantly in the east. From March 22 to April 1, you will also see the Moon wander from planet to planet. While you will not need a telescope to see all these planets and the Moon in our early evening sky, a telescope will allow you to see these planets and the Moon up close.
Joining these planets in our evening sky over the next couple of weeks will be passes of the International Space Station. Passes will occur between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. MST. Look for a fast moving point of light moving from west to east that will change in brightness as it crosses the sky. For exact times of passage of the International Space Station for any location go to http://www.heavens-above.com.
On the evening of Saturday, March 27 through the morning hours of Sunday, March 28 three of Jupiter's moons will cast shadows on the clouds of Jupiter. The observatory, at the Odyssium, will be open for extended viewing hours on Saturday night for individuals wishing to see this fairly rare triple shadow transit on Jupiter. The triple shadow transit will be best seen at 1:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
The Odyssium's observatory will be open (weather permitting) from March 26 to
April 4, including Spring Break, in the evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
for free public viewing of the planets and the other wonders of our night sky.
Through a telescope you will see the phases of Mercury and Venus, the fabulous
rings of Saturn, the cloud belts and moons of Jupiter and the polar caps on
Mars. The observatory will also be open from March 27 to April 4 in the
afternoons between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. for solar observing. Come and join us
for these very special astronomical events.

DIVE into the Soul of the Sea!
at the Odyssium®
Edmonton, Alberta -Go from the Winter Blahs to the Summer Aaahs in just
minutes --- DIVE IN and experience Coral Reef Adventure, presented by AMA Travel
Services, in IMAX® at the Odyssium®, starting Friday, February 13, 2004. Find
yourself in a marine metropolis filled with brilliant colour, dazzling movement,
and breathtaking diversity. Coral Reef Adventure takes you on a journey to a
world few human beings have ever experienced up close.
The beauty, danger and wonder of the South Pacific's coral reef habitats come to
life on the giant IMAX screen. You will dive deep beneath the water's surface
into the sparkling tropical sea on an unforgettable coral reef adventure, taking
you into the breathtaking underwater world of the coral reefs in Australia,
exploring deep-water habitats in Fiji, volcanic Tahiti and the mysterious
Rangiroa Atoll.
Join two divers as they explore the reef of the South Pacific searching for
signs of both reef decline and survival. On their expedition they make thrilling
and unexpected discoveries, endure personal risks and become part of a growing
global effort to sustain reefs. "This is one of the most technically
complex underwater films ever made. Taking a 250-pound IMAX camera, along with
lights and other necessary equipment, to depths of 350 feet pushed the envelope
way beyond the usual difficulties of filming under the sea. It was some of the
most strenuous and demanding filming I've ever been involved with. But it is
also this technology that makes it possible to truly show how marvelous the
reefs are and to reveal how very much we stand to lose without them," said
Howard Hall, one of the divers.
You will feel as if you are actually submerged when you accompany the dive team
to extreme depths where water pressure is 11 times greater than at sea level.
Coral Reef Adventure marks the first time a diver has taken an IMAX camera down
370 feet in the open sea.
Film critics from around the globe are raving about Coral Reef Adventure. It was
the highest grossing documentary of 2003, as Box Office surpassed $24 million
and counting. Voted Best IMAX Theatre Film of 2003 by the members of the Giant
Screen Theater Association, MacGillivray Freeman's documentary for IMAX
theatres, Coral Reef Adventure was directed by Academy Award® - nominated
director Greg MacGillivray (EVEREST, Dolphins).

telescope makes a great gift for those astronomy enthusiasts. A telescope can be
the beginning of a life long hobby, launch a career in science or just open a
universe of discovery.
So what is a good telescope for you and how do you purchase the right one? If you are just beginning to explore the universe, experts recommend starting with a good set of binoculars and a detailed astronomy book then progressing to a telescope. Binoculars and a detailed astronomy book teach the essential skills of observing and getting to know the sky, which will ultimately enable you to manoeuvre your telescope with greater skill. Overwhelming Response to the Space Shuttle Columbia Crew Book of Condolences
Edmonton, AB - To honour NASA astronauts Rick Husband, William McCool, Michael Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark, and Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon, the Odyssium established an opportunity for Edmontonians to communicate their sympathy to the astronauts' families: a book of condolences was made available for signing in the main lobby of the Odyssium, and will be forwarded to Johnson Space Center. Accompanying the book of condolences is a photo of the Space Shuttle Columbia crew and copies of their biographies.
Due to the tremendous response from Edmontonians, the Odyssium has extended the Space Shuttle Columbia book of condolences for signing by members of the public until March 9, 2003. Since the book became available on February 3, over 3,000 signatures and notes of sympathy have been recorded, the Odyssium is now into a third book of condolences.

Sunday to Thursday - 10am until 5pm
Friday & Saturday - 10am until 9pm
"The staff and volunteers of the Odyssium deeply mourn the tragic loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia crew members," says George Smith, President & CEO of Edmonton Space & Science Foundation/Odyssium. "Over the years we have had the honour and privilege to host many NASA astronauts for visits to our facility, including Dr. Rick Husband who visited in 1999 along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Julie Payette and other crew members from the STS-96 mission. These remarkable individuals never fail to inspire everyone they meet with their intelligence, courage, and dedication. Although they themselves fully acknowledge the risks of space travel, it makes their loss no less deeply felt."

Mars Watch 2003!
Quietly, the God of War approaches, sneaking up from behind and ready to invade our consciousness with its closest and brightest display in our lifetime! If you have been watching the night sky lately and have been seeing a bright reddish-orange beacon low in the southern sky then you have been seeing the planet Mars, named after the Roman God of War. Approximately every 26 months our Earth, which travels in a faster orbit, catches up to the planet Mars in its slower outer orbit, bringing these two worlds close together. This year Mars will come closer to the Earth than at any other time in recorded history, a mere 55,758,006 kilometres or 3.1 light minutes away, a spatial gathering that has not occurred for about 60,000 years!

Image Generated by Starry Night Pro - Mars Rising on August 7, 2003
The Odyssium, in conjunction with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada Edmonton Centre, will be offering free public viewing of this close encounter with Mars from August 22 to September 1 from 9:30 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at the Odyssium's observatory, clear skies permitting. During that period of time Mars will rise at about 9:30 p.m. in the east-southeast gaining elevation as the night progresses. The best times to view Mars will be between midnight and 2:00 a.m. when Mars reaches its highest elevation in the south, hopefully allowing telescopic observers a chance to see the Martian polar ice caps, the darker and lighter surface features and possibly upper atmospheric clouds clearly. After September 1 the Odyssium's observatory will be open on weekends to view Mars as it recedes from the Earth.

Image Generated by Starry Night Pro - Mars at 2 am on August 28, 2003
As an informative introduction to our night sky and observing Mars, the Odyssium will be presenting a live planetarium show entitled: "The Sky Tonight: Mars Watch". The show will focus on stars, constellations and the other wonders of our night sky that can be viewed from Alberta during the summer and fall period. In addition, the show will present a look at our age-old fascination with the red planet and explain some of the details of this year's special event using computer simulations and up to date Mars images. This 40-minute live sky show in the Margaret Zeidler Star Theatre plays every Friday and Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. and is part of a general admission purchase during these times. A special engagement of the "Sky Tonight: Mars Watch" will take place at 9:00 p.m. from August 27 through till August 30 at a cost of $3.00 per person.

Looking to Beat Rising Energy Costs?
Check out a FREE presentation on Solar Energy and Energy Conservation at the Odyssium.
Edmonton, Alberta- On Friday, June 27, 2003, Mr. Rob Harlan will present a 2-hour workshop on the topic of Solar Energy and energy Conservation, as part of the Odyssium's Community Speakers' Series. Providing relevant and credible information on a wide range of science and technology topics is a priority for the Odyssium. The Odyssium is providing this special presentation at NO CHARGE as a public service.
Mr. Rob Harlan, known as a "Solar Pioneer", is the founder of Mendocino Solar Service of California, a solar contracting firm specializing in designing, installing and repairing solar electric systems since 1996. He played a key role in The Little River Inn's energy conservation and solar energy system. The Little River Inn implemented an aggressive energy conservation and production plan, including an 8.6 KW utility-interactive PV system. They reduced their annual electrical bill by US$18,000.
Mr. Harlan will demonstrate how solar energy and energy conservation can save energy and can also save you money. It can be as simple as changing one light bulb in your home to a more efficient lightening. If you are striving to be environmentally conscious then do not miss this presentation for tips on how to cut back the amount of energy you use at home and at the office.

populations. Science in Motion directly inspires youth through hands-on
classroom activities, assemblies, teacher inservices, and community
presentations, all fast-paced, humorous and addressing the learner objectives
from the Alberta Science Curriculum. Since its first year in 1996, Science in
Motion has grown from delivering programs to 13,000 students to over 35,000
students in 2002. Using our own certified teachers to deliver our programs,
Science in Motion also uniquely provides informal professional development
opportunities for the students' teachers.
Science in Motion is the only science out-reach program of its kind in Alberta,
servicing 75 communities in 2002.

Why are there so many new disease threats in
Canada today?
Find out at the Odyssium!
Sunday, June 8, 2003, 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Free Presentation
Edmonton, Alberta- On Sunday, June 8, 2003, Candace Rypien and a group of
University of Alberta graduate students will present a seminar on the newly
emerging diseases in Canada and the world. The hour-long presentation will cover
basic information about infectious bacteria, viruses, and other microbes with a
special emphasis on Mad Cow Disease, West Nile Virus and SARS. Scientific
students from the University of Alberta will present the information at a level
to be understood by all ages.
Mad Cow Disease is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by a prion, or protein, which is mis-folded. In humans, this can lead to spongiform encephalopathies or a degeneration of the brain. West Nile Virus is a disease caused by a virus. The family name of the virus is Flaviviridae. Symptoms of West Nile Virus infection are fever, headache, and body aches. A virus known as the corona virus also causes SARS. Its symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath and flu like symptoms.
There are many newly emerging diseases in the world today. The best way to battle these diseases is by education and understanding them better. Providing relevant and credible information on a wide range of science and technology topics is a priority for the Odyssium. Because Mad Cow Disease, SARS and West Nile Virus poses such an immediate health concern, and because the Odyssium has received a number of inquiries for further information on this topic, the Odyssium is providing this special presentation at NO CHARGE as a public service.
In addition, the Odyssium has created a SARS information display in the main lobby that details what we know to date about its cause and effect, its mechanisms of transmission, and methods of prevention, as provided by the World Health Organization, as well as a chart that is updated weekly, identifying the incidence of new cases of SARS around the globe.

Odyssium™ Receives Donation to Upgrade IMAX® Theatre for the Deaf
Edmonton, AB - - On Saturday, May 31, 2003, as a finale to Hearing Awareness month in May, a cheque will be presented to the Odyssium from three local Associations of the Deaf to assist with the costs involved in upgrading the IMAXâ Theatre with Rear Window Captioning technology.
This photo opportunity will take place on Saturday, May 31, 2003 at 1:30pm at the Edmonton Association of the Deaf Community Centre, 11404 142 Street.
George Smith, President & CEO of the Odyssium/Edmonton Space & Science Foundation, will be accepting the cheque from the Alberta Association of the Deaf, the Edmonton Association of the Deaf and the Alberta Cultural Society of the Deaf.
"Part of the Odyssium's core mandate is to make science and technology
accessible to everyone," says Smith. "While our entire facility is
indeed physically accessible, it does not as yet comprehensively accommodate
deaf and hard of hearing nor visually impaired individuals. One of the
priorities on our list to address this concern is the installation of a pair of
systems that will enable the deaf and hard of hearing and visually impaired
visitors to fully enjoy the IMAX experience at the Odyssium."
The $6,899 in funds raised by these three Associations of the Deaf will go towards the total cost of $23,000 for the installation of a Rear Window Captioning system. Visitors with a hearing impairment will use a mirror platter, mounted on the seat in front of them, to read LED-produced text of the film that is reflected from an LED board mounted on the rear wall of the theatre. It is anticipated that all necessary funds will be raised and the system installed by year-end.

Rare Total Lunar Eclipse, May 15, 2003
On Thursday, May 15, Albertans will really be seeing a red Moon rising. No it's not an illusion or even an atmospheric effect but a rare total lunar eclipse, the first of two similar lunar eclipses that we will be able to see this year! For Albertans, the total eclipse will already be in progress when the Moon rises. The following are times for the event:
| Edmonton | Calgary | Grande Prairie | ||
| Moonrise: | 9:22 p.m. MDT | 9:14 p.m. MDT | 9:52 p.m. MDT | |
| Penumbral eclipse begins: | 7:05 p.m. MDT | (not visible) | (not visible) | (not visible) |
| Partial (umbral) eclipse begins: | 8:03 p.m. MDT | (not visible) | (not visible) | (not visible) |
| Total eclipse begins: | 9:14 p.m. MDT | Moon rises in eclipse | Moon rises in eclipse | Moon rises in eclipse |
| Total eclipse ends: | 10:07 p.m. MDT | visible (SE) | visible (SE) | visible (SE) |
| Partial (umbral) eclipse ends: | 11:17 p.m. MDT | visible (SE) | visible (SE) | visible (SE) |
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon travels through the Earth's shadow in space and occurs only when we have the right alignment between the Sun, Earth and the Moon. The darkest portion of the Earth's shadow is called the umbra. During the total eclipse portion, when the Moon has completely entered the Earth's umbral shadow, the Moon will normally take on a dark red or rusty appearance. After the total lunar eclipse ends at 10:07 p.m. MDT, we will begin to see the Moon slowly unveil itself out of the Earth's umbral shadow. At 11:17 p.m. MDT, the partial umbral eclipse of the Moon will end and we will again see our Full Moon in full glory.
Viewing a lunar eclipse will require no special filters or optical instruments. It is entirely safe to watch, unlike a solar eclipse. Telescopes and binoculars will give you a better view by showing greater detail on the Moon but are not necessary to view a lunar eclipse. Since the Moon will be rising in eclipse, eclipse viewers may wish to find a location that provides an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon. Tall buildings and trees will hamper your views of this rising eclipsed Moon. Individuals in apartments with a clear view to the east will definitely have an advantage.
For individuals wishing to watch the lunar eclipse through telescopes, the
Odyssium and the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (Edmonton Members) will
have telescopes set up around the Odyssium's Observatory in Coronation Park from
9:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 15. The event is free of charge and we
invite everyone interested out for the event! But remember, the event is weather
dependant and consequently the eclipse may not be visible if we have overcast
skies. So dress warmly for the event and let's hope for clear skies!

Astronaut's Name Year in Space Astronaut's Name Year in Space
Marc Garneau* 1984, 1996, 2000 Robert Thirsk* 1996
Roberta Bondar* 1992 Bjarni Tryggvason 1997
Steve MacLean* 1992 Dave Williams* 1998
Chris Hadfield* 1995, 2001 Julie Payette* 1999
* Astronauts hosted by the Odyssium in Edmonton.
The Canadian Astronaut Program was established in 1983, when the United States invited Canada to fly an astronaut on their Space Shuttle. This led to the creation of a permanent corps of Canadian astronauts to co-ordinate and conduct Canadian experiments in space. In 1992, Dr. Williams was accepted from a field of 5330 applicants to begin astronaut training. In 1995 Dr. Williams was selected to join the international class of NASA mission specialist astronaut candidates. From July 1998 until September 2002, Dr. Williams held the position of Director of the Space and Life Sciences Directorate at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas - the first non-American to hold a senior management position within NASA. In April 1998 Dr. Williams participated in STS-90 as Mission Specialist 3 aboard Space Shuttle Columbia and is currently training to participate in his second spaceflight, Mission STS-118/13A.1. Certified in 2001 as an aquanaut during a seven-day training exercise in Aquarius, the world's only underwater research laboratory, Dr. Williams is also the first Canadian to have lived and worked in space and in the ocean.

Leonid Meteor Shower!
Peaks November 18/19, 2002
Last time to see a strong Leonid Meteor Shower for 100 Years!
The evening of November 18 will begin the most anticipated meteor shower over the last 30 years, the Leonid meteor shower! The peak of the meteor activity is always difficult to predict but sometime between the evening and morning hours of November 18/19 we may again experience a very strong meteor shower. This year there has been a prediction that the peak time for the Leonid meteor shower will be on November 19 between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. MST (which will be visible from all of North America).
Each November the Earth passes through the orbit of periodic comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle and encounters dusty debris left behind by this comet. This debris hits the Earth's atmosphere at a high speed and creates the short streaks of light that we call a "shooting star", "falling star" or meteor. Every 33 years however, when the parent comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle returns to the Earth's neighborhood, there is an increase in meteor activity. The years 1799, 1833 and 1966 were years in which up to 150,000 meteors per hour were seen during the peak period. Could 2002 be another one of these meteor "storm" years? Only time will tell. This year the Earth will pass directly through a swarm of particles left behind by this comet.
The best place to view this meteor shower is away from all bright city lights. So the Odyssium's public observatory will not be open for the event. No one will need to use a telescope or binoculars to view this meteor shower, just dress warmly, lie back in a lawn chair and look up with your eyes alone. Very few meteors will be seen from the city limits due to the high amount of light pollution, which will wash out all but the brightest meteors, so you really should leave the city limits and find a dark location to view the meteors from. How many meteors will be seen from a dark location around Edmonton this year? Well, that again is very difficult to say, but on average we should be able to see a fairly strong meteor shower with anywhere from 500 to more than 1000 meteors per hour to be seen at the peak of the shower. The nearly Full Moon will shed some unwanted light in the sky but this meteor shower could well put on a good show even under moonlit sky conditions.
Where should one look to find the meteors? The meteors can be seen everywhere in the sky. However, they will seem to radiate away from the constellation of Leo, which rises in the east at about midnight. When Leo is higher in the sky the chances of seeing more meteors becomes greater, so the best time to look for meteors would be between midnight and sunrise. So look up and you might be in for a real treat this year! S don't miss out on what could be the best meteor shower for over 100 years!

Get ready for the summer's best meteor shower. On the evening of August 11 through until the morning hours of August 12, we can witness the peak activity of the annual Perseid Meteor Shower.
These meteors, or "falling stars", are produced when the Earth passes through tiny fragments of ice, dust and rock left orbiting the solar system in the orbit of a comet. The particles of debris of the Perseid Meteor Shower originated from Periodic Comet Swift-Tuttle which passed through our inner solar system back in 1992 and which will return for a close flyby of planet Earth in the year 2126! These tiny particles, travelling at speeds up to 70 kilometres per second, vaporize against the intense heat through friction with our Earth's atmosphere to produce streaks of light through the air that we call a meteor. At times larger pieces of rock or ice fall during a meteor shower and produce an unprecedented "fireball" through our sky
While the expected peak of the shower occurs sometime around 4:00 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time (MDT) on August 12, we can still witness a fairly good show during the dark evenings after sunset and the early mornings before sunrise around the date of the peak activity. Because the peak occurs during our daylight hours we need to watch the sky during the morning of Monday, August 12 or on the evening of Monday, August 12 to see the most number of meteors. Meteors associated with this shower can be seen a couple weeks before and after the peak activity, but to a lesser degree.
To see these Perseid Meteors, start watching the sky after sunset right through until the predawn morning hours on either or both evenings of Sunday, August 11 and/or Monday, August 12 (NOTE: no optical aids are required to view a meteor shower). To get the best view of this meteor shower it is recommended that you observe from outside the city, away from the bright city lights to allow you to see many more meteors than can be seen from a light polluted environment.
Odyssium's public Observatory located in Coronation Park will be open, clear skies permitting, on both nights from sunset to 10:00 p.m.
Clear skies to all and have fun watching!

Edmonton, Alberta- This weekend commencing at 12 noon on June 15…Odyssium
invites you to Zap, Blast, Freeze and enjoy yourself when Odyssium officially
launches the Canadian Premiere of ZAP! Surgery Beyond the Cutting Edge Feature
Exhibition. One of the world's most interactive and largest exhibitions devoted
to the science of surgery, it's Odyssium's Feature Exhibition from June 15, 2002
to January 5, 2003.
Very few of us will ever operate on a human body. But now you will have the chance to try out the latest surgical techniques with high-tech equipment in this spectacular 6,000 square foot travelling exhibit, putting you in the role of a real-life surgeon!
ZAP!'s interactive exhibits offer a unique look at how light, sound and other forms of energy are used nowadays in actual surgical procedures. Five exhibit clusters showcase the latest in non-invasive surgical technologies: lasers, endoscopes, ultrasound, cryosurgery and the Gamma Knife. Within each cluster, three uniquely different approaches allow you to understand the underlying principles and applications of these extra-ordinary surgical techniques:
· Explore It! Activities explain how each different form of energy works and
how it's applied in surgery today;
· Be a Surgeon activities give you "hands-on" experience with
simulated surgery in a virtual operating room or other interactive setting;
· Real Stories/Real Surgery videos show you actual surgical procedures using
these innovative technologies, their potential risks and benefits, and
intriguing human-interest stories.
Your hand-eye coordination will be tested to the extreme as ZAP! "Lets
YOU be the Surgeon" and you attempt to:
· Blast a Kidney stone with Ultrasound
· Zap a brain tumour with the Gamma Knife
· Freeze a liver tumour using Cryosurgery
· Perform corrective eye-surgery using Laser Surgery
· Test your hand-eye coordination with Endoscopy
It's almost like something out of a science fiction novel, but it's actual non-invasive surgical techniques that doctors are using today. With ZAP!, you get to try them our for yourself, and see how they actually work.
ZAP! also includes:
ZapCam - a motion simulator ride offering an exciting ride through the inner body, stopping at the heart, lungs and liver. You'll see the human anatomy in dazzling 3-D animations and feel the motion of travelling through the body.
Zap Jr. an area especially designed for kids ages 5 to 8, includes a
large-scale version of the popular Hasbro Operation® game and a host of other

Edmonton, Alberta-- Explore the science and mystery of the world hidden inside The Human Body…playing in The Original IMAX Theatre at Odyssium™ beginning June 22, 2002 through September 2, 2002.
Combining groundbreaking filmmaking techniques with the ordinary miracles that keep our bodies functioning from morning until night, The Human Body presents a dramatic picture of life that goes on without our control and often without our notice. It's a fascinating new dimension to the exploration of the miracle of life in its most personal of settings - our own bodies.
? Join the roller coaster ride of lunch as you track a tomato on its way to
the biological blender - our stomach.
? Witness the unexplained diving reflexes that allow infants to swim
comfortably.
? Follow a red blood cell through the pumping chamber of the body's engine room
- the heart.
The Human Body takes things as tiny as a red blood cell and magnifies them onto a 4-story-high IMAX screen! This IMAX film showcases the amazing accomplishments in the lives and bodies of a teenage boy and a couple expecting their first child.
With sophisticated computer graphics, you will be able to see X-ray images of the boy's body in motion as he cycles down the street. Watch as thermal imaging shows the blood flowing through the arteries and veins, and scanning electron microscopy illustrates the inside of an ear as cells actually dance to your favourite tunes.
At the heart of the film is the couple's experience of bringing new life into the world. The Human Body demonstrates how naturally the body adapts to the physical changes of pregnancy as well as the excitement and joy of having a newborn.
Don't miss this opportunity to peek inside the body to see what keeps you going every day.
The Human Body runs June 22 until September 2, 2002
in IMAX at Odyssium

Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees will take audiences on giant screen journey into
the hearts, minds and world of wild chimpanzees with the world's most famous

Imagine trekking through the dense foliage of Gombe National Park, located on

If you have been wondering what some of those lights in the sky are to the west after sunset you are not alone. This April and into the month of May a spectacular alignment of all five of the naked eye planets will take place in the west after sunset. Over the next few weeks you will see these planets change their positions relative to one another, dancing with one another from night to night. During the week of April 13 to 18 the waxing crescent Moon will be joining this grand gathering to make it a sight to behold.

The Odyssium’s public observatory will be open every clear Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. to view the planets up close through telescopes. See Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s cloud belts and major moons, the changing phases of Venus and Mercury and the planet Mars all at one time! But remember, to see all of the planets in this once in a lifetime event all you need to do is look up, without binoculars or a telescope. The next time that we will see all the planets bunched up like this will be in the year 2060! Happy planet gazing!
