Educational Enhancement Initiatives

Teacher Advisory Committees

These committees have been formed to gather feedback from teachers regarding our programming and to ensure that new programs meet the needs of teachers. We encourage you to participate in these forums. Most of the communication takes the form of email exchanges – face to face meetings are very rare. Current committees are focused on New Programs, Preschool
and Kindergarten, and Home Schools. If you would like to know what is coming down the pipe and would like a hand in shaping the future of science education at TELUS World of Science, we would like to hear from you. Please contact Max Scharfenberge (780) 452-9100 x2342 or by email at maxs@telusworldofscienceedmonton.com

After School Programs

TELUS World of Science is pleased to announce after School Programs for schools. To arrange a Club Activity for your school, please contact Pamela Brierley at 452-9100 x2243 or by email pbrierley@telusworldofscienceedmonton.com

Science Club

This after school club takes place at your school on a designated day of the week for a five week period. Many activities are available to choose from, and Science Clubs can be organized for grades 1-2, 3-4 or 5-6. Students will be actively involved in experiments for an hour each session. The final session will take place at TELUS World of Science. A teacher supervisor
from your school is required to be present at all sessions.

Five weekly sessions of 1 hour each
GROUP SIZE Maximum 24 students
FEE $35 per student

Rocket Club for Elementary School

Rocket Club takes place at TELUS World of Science in weekly sessions lasting 1.5 hours. Parents are encouraged to join with children in constructing challenging rocket models that really fly! Experience shows that children enjoy the construction process and learn many new skills. This program appeals equally to boys and girls, Moms and Dads. A great ‘team’ building exercise for your school. Recommended for Grades 5-6, but Grade 4 students can accomplish this with help from a parent. The Club culminates with a Launch Day that can be arranged with the school.

Five weekly sessions of 1.5 hours each
GROUP SIZE Maximum 24 students
FEE $55 per student

Rocket Club for Junior High

Our Junior High Rocket Club engages students with the science behind the development of rockets and presents highlights of the Space Programs of both Canada and the United States. Students are challenged to construct rockets out of basic materials using both hand and stationary tools and assembly jigs. Students will come away from the program with a number of new
skills and an appreciation for construction technologies. This program is designed to stimulate student interest on a number of levels and will have broad appeal on both the academic and technical side of the subject of rockets and space flight.

Six weekly sessions of 1.5 hours each
GROUP SIZE Maximum 20 students
FEE $65 per student

Science School

Science School is a week-long immersion in TELUS World of Science classes and activities for students, offering an intensive and hands-on experience to complement the existing school curriculum. Our Science Schools will continue to operate through 2007/2008. This immersion in TELUS World of Science’s programs complements the Alberta Learning curriculum for students
in Grade 1 through 9, and provides the full use of all of the TELUS World of Science’s features and school program resources. For information please contact Max Scharfenberge 452-9100 x2342 or by email at maxs@telusworldofscienceedmonton.com.

VEGA Scholarship Fund

In 1987, thanks to a generous individual sponsor, TELUS World of Science established the VEGA Scholarship Fund. This fund is dedicated to sponsoring elementary school age children in Edmonton and immediate districts to attend a Summer Science or Computer Camp of their choice at TELUS World of Science. In 2007, 20 elementary school-aged children were selected
to attend one of our Summer Camps. Our Summer Camps are designed to stimulate and promote a continued interest in learning while offering a truly enjoyable experience. VEGA Scholarship information will be sent to schools in January-February 2008. Please encourage your students to apply.
